Cadi de Jaager is our Lead SA Youth Hero for May

Written by: Sithandwa Ngwetsheni

Cadi de Jaager, a bubbly 9-year-old, was selected as our Lead SA Youth Hero for taking initiative and raising R20 000 for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital just to say thank you for the treatment she received at the hospital.

Cadi was diagnosed with Rathke’s Cleft cyst a couple of years ago. This is a non-cancerous growth that formed on her pituitary gland.

After a successful brain surgery, Cadi decided to raise funds for the Red Cross Children's Hospital as her way of giving thanks to the wonderful staff.

I just wanted to give back to the hospital for all the nice nurses and doctors who would check up on me at 5 o'clock in the morning.

Cadi's experience is also influencing her future dreams as she hopes to go into the medical field with the tools she acquired through her own experience as a patient.

Actually I would like to be paediatrician neuro-surgeon because I know what it feels to have a brain surgery, and I would just like to put the child at ease knowing that their doctor also had a brain surgery.
