Sheets for Shirts initiative changes lives of Cape Town youngsters

Written by: Tlou Legodi

Marriott International hotels group has teamed up with non-profit organisation Royal Kids to change the lives of young people in Cape Town. The company hands over unused sheets and Royal Kids turns them into shirts.

John Maytham speaks to Danolene Johanessen for more on the Sheets for Shirts initiative.

We started looking at how to create a sustainable vehicle for Royal Kids and then the idea came about where we could turn those sheets into school shirts for children that are less fortunate.

They are very high-quality sheets that are pure cotton, some of them are Egyptian cotton. At the moment we have clothed about 1,800 kids over the last couple of months and the kids have been wearing them from the beginning of the year until now.

On the labour and equipment used, Johanessen said as Royal Kids is an NPO, Marriott International came on board and created jobs and made funding available, resulting in the creation of a company called Restore SA, which employs 11 women and two men.

We also make other types of products like laundry bags. There's an initiative that we are currently doing with Marriott International by removing plastics .. and replacing it with fabrics.
