Nali'bali to commemorate literacy month with bilingual storytelling contest

Written by: Neo Koza

Nali'bali, the national reading for enjoyment campaign, will commemorate Literacy Month by encouraging a wave of storytelling across the country with its third annual multilingual storytelling contest, Story Bosso.

With a focus on folktales, in a bid to preserve this national treasure, the campaign will be hosting storytelling performances and events across the country and is inviting members of the public to join in the fun.

Azania Mosaka speaks to storyteller Gcina Mhlope, as well as comedian Marc Lottering following the official launch on Thursday.

The two shared some of the stories they have learned and carried over the years.

One of them - and I have been to Asia where they claim it is their story - it is The Crocodile and the Monkey.

Gcina Mhlope, Storyteller

I used to listen to adult conversations, but growing up on the Cape Flats you would hear all the skinner (gossip), those were the stories that excited me. It was very colorful for me.

Marc Lottering,

Participants will be allowed to share the traditional stories they remember hearing growing up, or they can make up new ones.

Nal’ibali Literacy Mentors will be hosting community events in the Western Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga, helping the campaign collect its goal of 5 000 stories – a step towards preserving this unique part of SA heritage.

South Africans are invited to submit their entries between 1 and 30 September as audio or video clips online on the campaign’s website www.nalibali.org.
