Tracey Lange's #WCW: Renshia Manuel of GrowBox
Every Wednesday on her mid-morning show, Tracey Lange interviews her Woman Crush Wednesday #WCW.
This week, Tracey spoke with Renshia Manuel, CEO and creator of GrowBox - a Social Enterprise and Wholesale Plant Nursery established in Hanover Park, Cape Town.
She was recently named the Social Entrepreneur of the year at the 2019 Fairlady Santam Women of the Future Awards. This is awarded female entrepreneurs making a real difference in their community.
Unemployed and struggling to put food on the table, Renshia started growing vegetables in her backyard to feed her four children. This sparked her business idea to help households grow their own food at their own homes.
"I started a vegetable garden in my own backyard. I soon realised that I had space available to me where many of my community members did not. There wasn't access to available land space around them. So then I came up with the idea of starting a nursery but how do incorporate the nursery and help the community in the same situation. How can they grow their own food?"— Renshia Manuel, CEO and creator of GrowBox
Through GrowBox, she now helps alleviate poverty by providing disadvantaged communities, such as Hanover Park, with the necessary training and mediums to sustainably grow their own vegetables at their homes.
Her business manufactures and supplies fully stocked vegetable boxes for those who do not have sufficient space to grow their own vegetables - for instance, people living in informal settlements, flats or backyard dwellers where space is limited.
