Hero honoured for giving children purpose through education

Written by: Elizabeth Kgabane

LeadSA and 947 shine a spotlight on the January hero Randy Mampuru, who is honoured for her initiative Kidz Hub, a nonprofit organisation (NPO) that empowers children in Soweto through education.

Based in Dobsonville, Kidz Hub was established in 2016 to help primary school children in townships to achieve academic success by providing after-school programmes that focus on academic and personal development.

Mampuru, who is known for her community work that ranges from financial management, leadership development and entrepreneurship, engages parents and volunteer varsity students to achieve academic progress for the learners.

Arriving early in our office in Sandton for her interview, Randy had a beaming smile on her face ready to share her story with the 947 listeners.

Chatting to her briefly before her interview, Randy uncovered how making a career move from the tourism industry to taking a gap year at home to redefine her plans brought the reality of what children face in their daily lives after school.

While their parents are still at work when school is out, the learners detour to go play with their friends until it's early evening and their parents are about to get home.

Randy saw it best to utilise that opportunity with tutoring programmes and established Kidz Hub as these learners were within her reach.

Andy Maqondwana had a chat with Randy on the 947-midday show.
